Holography Studio Proposal

Why?

Nothing compares to holography

When looking at a hologram, you are not looking at the light reflected off the surface of the print or a computer monitor as in a photograph, but a recreation of the light when it was reflected off the object/ subject during the recording.

New generation

Now, there is a new generation of people who know nothing of the phenomena that was holography during the 80’s & 90’s

New techniques

Holography, like many other mediums has benefited from new technology.
Stereograms for instance, (the type of holography that originates in photographic footage and also the type that I am most interested in) can make advantage of the software developments in applications like photoshop and final cut pro and hard ware developments like the video capabilities of DSLR’s & Stedicams

Stereograms

Stereograms are holograms that are made up of either photographic images/ film images or computer generated images. For example, If I take a series of photographs in a tracking motion, i.e., I walk like a crab for 10 seconds while taking roughly 36 photographs of a scene. I then make a slit hologram of each of the photographs. When the viewer observes the final hologram, basically, one eye sees one image while the other eye sees another, giving an illusion of three dimensional depth. Also, as the photographs can be taken of a variable length of time, the experience of time is also recorded and observed.

What will I do?

I aim to build and run a holography studio in Grosmont, Monmouthshire.

It will be a small but capable studio, able to make regular holograms of up to 30x40 cm to start with.
It will have one holography table and one darkroom.

There will be two main uses of the studio

Use it to make artworks
Use it to run week long classes

At the moment there are very few places you can learn to make holograms in the world

Stop PressI have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the purchase of the lab and installation. Please follow this link: Kickstarter
